I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

57F, 100% and calm.  Pretty nice weather this morning.  Great to be on vacation and on taper at the same time.  Slept in and went out for a quick six:  8:50 (143), 7:58 (155), 7:51 (159), 7:41 (164), 7:24 (171) and 7:08 (176).  Overall 6.18 miles in 48:13, 7:48 per mile. Trying to not run too far this week but not worrying too much about keeping my speed down.  For race day, I think I can hold 165 bpm pretty well, 170 not so much.  I went out at 170 in Richmond and that was my demise.  Supposed to be back down to 27F tomorrow morning.  The computer is predicting low 40s for January 1, which would be ideal, but I think this far out they just go by historical averages, no way to rely on temperature predictions that far out.

67F, 100% SSE 7 mph.  Very unsettled weather today.  It was supposed to be 27F this morning, they missed it by a small margin of error.  Luckily I looked at the computer before venturing out in 3 layers.  Ran 6.18 in 56:07, 9:05 per mile, 143 bpm, 149 max.  Pretty stiff and sore to start, after running some hard ones yesterday, but I loosened up and finished pretty well.  Heart rate wasn't too favorable, combination of warm weather and day after a mini-workout, I hope.

Merry Christmas to all.

35F, 85%, ENE 8 mph.  Somewhat cold but not too bad, only wore 1 layer and left the long pants home for this short run.  Ran 6.18 miles in 49:57, 8:05/mile, including 6x400, 7:45 pace down to 6:53 on the last one.  Not all out but as fast as I dared this close to D-Day.  I strained my back doing "some assembly required" over Christmas, to the point I didn't run yesterday.  Still pretty gimpy this morning but decided I had to run anyway and see what happened.  If it is my 3rd DNS in 4 marathons, so be it.  But nothing happened, it is different muscles than I use for running, lucky break.  The back was plenty sore afterwards, but I don't care about that.

34F, 79%, N 9 mph (31F, 74% and calm at the end).  Pretty cold this morning, met Wade at the Y and we did 5 at a medium pace, 8:38 (145), 7:59 (158), 8:19 (155), 8:17 (156), and 8:34 (155).  Way too much effort for the speeds involved, quite worrisome, but better a bad day today than Tuesday.  There is a chance we could be splashing around in the rain, so I experimented without socks today.  My shoes are soft and there didn't seem to be any difference with or without.  Have had problems lately anyway with my sock sliding down into my shoe, I'll probably ditch them for the race.  Also have no idea what I am going to carry with me, my best idea right now is pickle juice.  I have no hydration plan, no calorie intake or electrolytes plan, no carb-loading plan, no socks.  But I've got my pre-race restaurant and my post-race excuses nailed down, let it fly.
