I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

I have been to two different chiros now and they are both saying the same thing, that it isn't a herniated disc but sciatic nerve passing through the psoas, which has probably been aggravated from a recent uptick in weights.  I guess that's right, it's all I have to go on right now.  Ran a mile this morning and it hurt a lot, although I am getting around OK today.  Needless to say, Grandma's Marathon is a scratch.  It seems that an aggressive stretching regimen is going to get me past this the quickest.  I am spinning for an hour every morning and started back on weights yesterday.  There is some discomfort with that but it is on a different order than running or even walking.  Those are the only two activities that give me trouble.

The good news I guess is that it is not a herniated disk. I had a sciatic never issue so I know how painful it can be. I tried to run through it and messed up my other leg due to trying to compensate for the pain. I was in a world of hurt. Therefore, I think the spinning is a good course of action. The sciatic issue ended up being that one of my lower back muscles wasn't firing properly. What to look for is not something I can explain with text, unfortunately.

Oh man. Speaking from very recent experience nerve pain is no fun. It also made me injure my aductor area by compensation. Be sure to do any and all therapy they give you. Hopefully you will heal nicely before too long.

Hoping for a speedy recovery. Keep up the cardio - glad you are able to do some cycling.

I used to lift a lot of weights. There are so many things you can do (wrong) that can cause problems. I really avoid any weight exercises that create compression or twisting on my spine.

Can't they remove that nerve?

And by they, I mean the people that faked the moon landing.

Did I hear that you might try to fit in TOU? If you do, we should hookup. That is what I am shooting for anyway. Maybe IJR could win some money at roping and make the trip too.

Burt... what???we landed on the moon.....that is so cool!

David, still not completely convinced, but more and more the nerve pain seems to be moving into my piriformis, so I guess the chiros are right.

Dan, I had real nerve pain about 4 years ago, when I got an MRI and it showed a herniated disc very plainly. This is kind of the same but different. Not really worried yet, although the interruption is aggravating.

Joe, in order to swim I would have to join a different gym and I think the spinning is probably as good if not better. Would be nice to break it up, though.

Preston, weights may have exacerbated this whole thing in the first place, but I need them. My son is pretty knowledgeable, although he isn't an expert on the injury aspect, for sure.

Burt, that would be option C, but just in case can you send me a private message with contact info?

Rye, I am certainly considering it, although I know already that altitude will be a problem. I have never run a really good marathon at altitude, too big of a hit for us coastal types. If they had hot weather like St. George it could get interesting, but that isn't likely in Logan.
