Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

32F, 43%, S 7 and clear.  Beautiful morning in Sandy, Utah.  I arrived late Tuesday night for a funeral on Wednesday, flight 5 hours late and didn't get to bed until 4:00 a.m., so didn't run yesterday.  But found the Jordan River Parkway this morning.  The computer said 38F for this zip code but there was frost on the grass down by the river, so that means 32F.  Ran up the trail from 100th South, hit the golf course and ran (trespassed) around it, got lost a couple of times, not sure where the trail goes from there.  Got back to my starting point and headed south, then back to the car, total of 8.37 miles in 1:13:34, 8:48/mile, 157 average heart rate, 163 max.  Ate breakfast and barely made my plan. I could get used to running in this but I know it isn't so pleasant in the winter.

54F, 98%, NE 1 mph.  I think today is the last sub-60 day until November, lucky to have made it this far.  Ran 8.01 miles in 1:06:42, 8:20/mile.  155 bpm average, 169 max.  Miles 4 and 5 were 8:10 (157) and 8:11 (158).  Got two sub-8 miles at the end.  Heel is feeling pretty good this week, not really a factor anymore so long as I honor the fact that it is still in recovery mode.  Went to the Y for a spin class and got trashed as usual, but I kept up fine.  I hit 174 heart rate a couple of times.  Started to wonder how long a particular sprint was going to last then realized I could hold it as long as the instructor, which was a good feeling.  I feel like I am improving pretty quickly right now, getting my fitness back.  Here is a table I made up of my speed and heart rate at miles 4 and 5 for the last 8 or 9 runs.  Earlier in the week and last week I was running those miles at a lower heart rate, so not a lot of conclusions, but the last 3 days are pretty instructive, starting with the Utah run:

I did significantly better at sea level despite being 30 degrees warmer, then even better today when it was slightly cooler, despite lifting weights yesterday.  I am definitely a flatlander.
