Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

78F, 88% and calm.  Ran 11.00 miles in 1:38:09, 8:55/mile, 157 bpm, 172 bpm max.  This was about all I could do with my current level of conditioning.  The sun came up for the last mile and a half and I melted like a popsicle.  Actually started to get nauseous, which was pretty weak.  My back hurt for the first 0.1 then wasn't much of an issue.  I took water at 4.5 and nothing further.  I have ice on my back now but it is mostly precautionary.  I think I have turned the corner on this thing but I'm trying to be smart about how fast I come back, although going from 7 to 11 doesn't look too smart, I know.

Great run this morning in the heat! 11 is a great distance. Glad you didn't melt.

I was just reading up on some hot weather suggestion and it said that we should never drink just water when it's really hot. It should alway be an endurance drink or a mixture of that sort with some protien, electrolites/salt and potassium (don't remember the exact suggestions). It says it's okay to drink water after a really hot run. I don't know if this is the right thing to do but I'm going to try it.

Sounds like a very hard run with such a high heart rate. You're also about 20 degrees hotter that in was here in Orem this morning.

Definitely hope you have turned the corner!

Nice going - sounds like you are getting closer to full strength with your injury. That sun is really a killer, especially in Houston where it turns everything into a steam bath.

I JUST RUN, Thank you for the information. I have only been drinking water with occasional salt tablet. I will be drinking Gatorade for my entire long tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks Bec, misery loves company, right? Good luck on your long run tomorrow.

IJR, I see stuff off and on about this. I used to take an electrolyte tablet but haven't done it lately, maybe I should re-think it. When I am getting ready for a marathon, I usually do the last 3 long runs with a combination electrolyte/calorie supplement -- I hate the stuff, which is why I don't do it more often, but I am pretty sure it helps on race day.

Stephen, I would say 58F is pretty hot for Orem in the morning, hope it cools down for you. I worry about you Utah guys in all that heat.

Andrea, thanks, I think so. The chiro was looking at me pretty strangely this morning when I told him how much I was running. I think he wants to sign me up for an endorsement deal.

Joe, isn't it amazing how you can be running in steam and still get dehydrated?
