Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

66F, 100%, calm and cloudy.  Got out the door at 5:00, then met Wade in his neighborhood at 6:00.  We ran a while and met my daughter back at our house at 7:00.  She is almost 6 months pregnant.  Wade and I had been hitting about 9:45 per mile up until then, but my daughter got us going, we were in the low 9s by the time she peeled off after 4+ miles.  Ran another mile with Wade, at which point I had 16.5, said good-bye and slogged out the remaining 3.5 in my neighborhood.  I was fighting this run mentally all the way to dropping Wade off, it has been way too long since I ran 20 miles.  At one point my cumulative pace was 9:41 -- I don't run much at this speed and it was playing with my head.  Also started bleeding despite using BodyGlide, so I was holding my shirt away from my chest for 6 miles -- that was an unusual sight.  But for the last 5K I picked it up naturally, wasn't really pushing anything, and felt better mentally.  But not completely acclimated to the heat yet, it will take a couple of weeks, maybe longer.  20.07 miles in 3:10:27, 9:29 per mile.  Forgot to look at the temperature when I got back but it was getting pretty warm, ran the last 5 miles on a couple of sips of water and felt a little nauseous when I got back.  Lower gut was also hurting from running fast yesterday, but hopefully it will be OK by Monday.

Back to those 20 mile runs again! Nice. The red from your blood blends in nicely with the orange shirt.......

3 hours in the soup, sounds like fun...

Good miles, can't believe it's just March with this heat.

Flatlander,

Hi. Nice miles...so warmer weather hits and to stay...maybe good, maybe not. Not sure. Warmer in CT than had been, but not 66 degrees yet.

Happy Belated Birthday.

So I am not sure, you running Boston?

From flatlander on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 17:07:14 from 76.31.26.153

Rye, unfortunately I was wearing white today!

Thanks allie, I'll survive. I thought BodyGlide was 100% effective.

Joe, I forgot to check the temperature when I got back, but it definitely went up during the run. It was pretty tolerable for the first 5 miles. But I really don't mind, I can train just as well in the heat. Last year I benefited at SGM because of it.

PRE, thanks; unfortunately I have pulled out of Boston due to illness and other training interruptions (mainly too much travel). I'll probably do something in June if I can get my conditioning back.

Body Glide doesn't work when you're wearing a shirt made out of brillo pads.

Ouch.. Been there on the holding the shirt out... Hope you're better than ok Monday

Nothing like a pregnant woman to speed up your pace :-) I would be intimidated!

I can't seem to get enough glide on either...same problem :-(

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 04, 2012 at 15:18:32 from 174.27.212.157

How are you feeling today?

GOOD JOB battling with the heat, chaffing and all. I am certain that all the miles you banked are going to pay you back like interests in the bank!

Kudos to your prego daughter! :)

Burt, I think they all are, at least after a couple of times through the washing machine. I'm just a sensitive guy.

Dan, lol, I thought for sure I was the only one!

IJR, she whipped us into shape pretty fast out there.

Smooth, much better, thanks, no lasting scars from Saturday.
