Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

Forgot to record the weather data, but it felt about the same as yesterday.  I went to bed very early last night, then woke up at 3 a.m.  Finally went back to sleep at 4:30 and slept until 6, so I got out late.  Felt lethargic for most of the run.  I decided to back off on the pace a little bit, 13.47 miles in 2:05:45, 9:20 per mile, 144 bpm.  Heart rate would have been lower except that in mile 10 I passed a woman who was going pretty slow.  She decided she didn't like that and started drafting off of me (not kidding).  No words exchanged.  I finally gave up on my plan to keep heart rate under 150 no matter my speed, went to 160 for about a mile, turned around to look and she was out of sight.  I had to do something.

About then a loose pit bull came prancing out (I was running through a redneck zone) and wouldn't go away.  He wasn't overtly aggressive but I didn't trust him.  Finally got rid of him by crossing a busy street -- when he tried to follow there was the sound of brakes screeching.  He scurried back to his neighborhood, but I was pretty upset that somebody would just let a dog like that wander around, right when elementary school kids are catching their buses.

Can't believe how long it is taking to get over this flu.  I skipped my flu shot this year, even though they are free at work, I won't do that again.  When I got home I announced to my wife that I am old.  She said "duh", which isn't even a word from our generation.

Sounds like you had quite the adventure today. Loose dogs can be a scary thing, that woman might have been even more frightening than the dog.

I was trying to figure out exactly why the woman made your heart rate rise...Hummm?

Don't you hate the "duh" ... Wouldn't you have loved to hear "Not in my eyes dear!".

Stray pitbulls are notorious for raising runners' HR! Nice work coaxing him into traffic. You should try that with the drafting lady next time ;)

When are we getting together to talk about your issue with dogs?

From flatlander on Thu, Mar 29, 2012 at 09:51:49 from 76.31.26.153

Acorn, I admit I was a little startled when I realized she was right in back of me.

IJR, that would never happen in this family, too brutally honest around here.

RT, I've been laughing all day about that one.

Dan, there's an idea. I haven't taken spray with me because I am afraid some owner would start shooting at me.

Clint, try to keep it a little shorter next time.

Rye, any time, I'll buy lunch. Or would this be more of a psychotherapy session?

Flat - That spray works on dog owners too. They can't shoot straight if you get it in their eyes :)
