Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

74F, 95% and calm.  Ran 5 very slow this morning, the tendon on top of my foot still hurts after 4 days off, the longer I ran the more it hurt, but never reached the point where I had to quit.  I don't have an exact distance since my Garmin battery cratered, but it was about 5.  The foot stopped hurting immediately after I quit and has felt fine all day.  I went to the gym tonight and spent an hour on the recumbent bike.  Thought I would mimic my running heart rate, but couldn't get it over 121 and I had lactate overload in my quads after 10 minutes.  I whined at my daughter on the phone while I was on the bike and she said I needed to take off some of the tension and increase my speed in order to get the heart rate up.  I always thought if I was working hard then I had a high heart rate so this was interesting.  On a more practical note, my quads are dead.  Did some leg weights and came home with a backache, which is good, since I will need something lined up to replace the foot injury once it heals.

I had a top foot tendon issue last summer. I ran through it, I didn't do speed workouts very much. And eventually, it went away. Hope all turns out well!

Well...glad you got the 5 in. The bike is a good option, but I never seem to get my hr up either. At least it didn't hurt all day, hope it heals fast for you

flat... there is a a fine line with cycling. You can blow your heart rate out of the water by going up an incline and hammering, bigger gears and mashing can cause you to see little green men. I think the thing that you will like the best is that you can get past a canine quickly....It you stick to a stationary bike your dead meat.

When I first started biking my quads killed me for about a month. I couldn't ride hard enough to get my HR up without the quads giving out. Now I can get my HR up while riding but still can't hold it for very long before the quads get tired and I have to be riding about +20 mph. It's just completely different muscles.

Hope all the aggravating aches and pains go away quickly!

Sorry to hear you are wounded Flat.

As one who has spent the last few months on the bike at the gym I would recommend that you try a steady RPM of about 90-95 and do intervals by cranking up the resistance for 2.5 minutes and then backing it off for 2.5 (or whatever interval you prefer).

I've also found that you can do tempo rides with increasing resistance and steady cadence. These things have gotten my heart rate up. Your heart is more fit than mine though so no guarantees!

Thanks all, lots of good advice. Not sure how long this is going to last, it is pretty tender this afternoon but that doesn't mean too much.
