Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

61F, 100%, E 5 mph.

2.5 miles without Garmin or HR monitor.  I took yesterday off to rest my left foot.  It was still sore when I got up but loosened up quite a bit during the day.  Took a long walk to a restaurant for lunch which helped considerably.  This morning the injury was still 60% there when I started, but was down to 10% by the time I finished, which was encouraging.  If today goes well I will do 5 tomorrow and if that goes well I'll try 10 on Friday and see where I am.  Finished up with a pretty good weight session, legs and a little bit of core.  Still glowing and gloating about my half on Saturday -- I'm about ready to retire.

is the pain at the base of the toe (metatarsalgia)? I got that awhile back, may have a trick for you if that's what is it.

And yeah, if you can run a windy 1:33 half during some tough training weeks, Boston could be a special race for you, time-wise. I'm sure it'll be "special" either way. I'll be hoping for that west wind for y'all.

Good job slowing down and taking care of that foot. And to a guy who can do daily 20-milers like they were nothing, I am afraid to ask just how long that "long walk" to the restaurant might have been!

Sounds promising that the pain goes away as you run, instead of getting worse.

Retire, huh? I know after Boston I am going to "retire" from running a marathon for a while, maybe focus on the short stuff and speed. I am not sure I will ever retire completely from running, though, I suspect you are the same.

Joe, I don't even have a dictionary with that word in it. The pain is buried right in the middle of my foot under the ball of the foot, so I think that is right. I was obviously worried about a stress fracture but I think I dodged that one. But yeah, if you have some wisdom on this one please let me know.

Claudio, you are funny, it was only about a half-mile. Things seem further when you are walking I guess.

IJR, thanks. If I stop improving I'm not sure what my reaction would be. Someday that will happen and I need to be prepared.

David, maybe we can get a special on rocking chairs if we buy two?

might be different from what I had. The pain I had awhile back was able to be located toward the base of my middle toe. For that, I read that a good solution (and it worked for me) was to put some padding on the ball of your foot, behind where the pain is, to create a bigger "toe arch" to take some pressure off the base of the toe. For padding, I used a cushioned corn pad, the ones shaped like a donut, then a layer of moleskin on top. It just took a little getting used to, to have the padding there but alleviated the toe pain a lot. If your pain is under the middle of the ball of the foot, it may be a different beast. I think when I was running it felt like the pain was on the ball of my foot but when I started poking around I could pinpoint it a little better. Maybe google metatarsalgia and see if it matches up.

Sounds like it's doing better already though, good to hear. It was a short-lived injury for me as well.
