Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

68F, 95%, SSE 4 mph.  2.83 miles in 24:54, 8:48/mile, max HR 159.  Foot feels kind of OK, but lots of groin pain from all the cross-training, not used to all the new moves.

So this week I have been doing about 2 hours a day of other stuff, pool running, spin class, weights and just sitting on a recumbent bike.  I think the pool running work,s but it also works my groin pretty hard, because of the upstroke.  I can bike as much as I want, which isn't much.

This morning the plan was to do a 5-mile run, then spin class, then stretching, then pool running.  Kind of like a long run without the running.  I took the run very easy, only speeding up as my groin felt up to it.  At about mile 4 there was a twinge in my right heel, but it never amounted to much and I finished the run in the 8:45 range.  Then went to a spin class.  This morning's flavor was Maria, whose sadistic streak rivals Rosie's; plus her Spanish accent was very thick so I wasn't always sure whether she was yelling at me or somebody else, most likely me.  These bikers are all pudgy, then they saddle up and they are gone, figuratively speaking.  I am keeping up better, though.

Then stretched in the weight room and was headed to the pool but decided to check it out before getting dressed.  It was chock full of people, have never seen it like that.  There was no room for a pool runner.  So I called it a day.  Felt pretty wasted by the end of the day but am fine this morning.  I am thinking of going to 5 miles a day this week.  I still have a 25K in Grand Rapids scheduled for May 10.  If I can get back into it this week I can probably make the start line, though I don't expect to be at full strength.
