Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

73F, 96%, SSE 8 mph. 10.07 miles in 1:28:34, 8:48/mile, 147 bpm.  Feeling sorry for myself that my heart rate keeps going up, then remembered that it is hot, it's supposed to go up.

70F, 100%, SE 5 mph.  10.05 miles in 1:21:51, 8:09 per mile.  First 5 at 8:25 per mile then 5 x 1K:  7:25 (163), 7:20 (164), 7:23 (167), 7:15 (168) and 7:33 (170), finishing out each mile at an aggressive recovery pace, 8:30 to 8:45.  Finished in a driving rainstorm, along with some other runners and walkers.  We had a good time out there.

66F, 100%, WSW 5 mph.  10.05 miles in 1:28:19, 8:47/mile, 144 bpm.  A little bit cooler and immediate HR improvement resulted.  I think I am finally over the flu.  Lots of aches and pains this morning after running harder yesterday.  It will definitely take a while to get my body used to higher mileage again.  Another encounter with a dog, the old open-the-garage-door-gee-I-don't-know-what-happened trick.  About 3 pounds but I'm counting it.

62F, 76%, ENE 7 mph and clear.  Saw the full moon this morning right before it set, realized this is the first time I have seen it this cycle.  It has been a wet spring.  The object was to keep my heart rate low for as long as I could and still maintain a 9:00 pace.  It worked pretty well in the cooler temperatures.  13.11 miles in 1:56:45, 8:54/mile, 141 bpm.  A rabbit ran out in front of me this morning.  For a minute I thought he was chasing me, but he was just too dumb to get out of the way.  No recorded change in my heart rate, but this incident nevertheless puts me pretty low on the food chain.  You just can't let rabbits affect you in the slightest.  Some may recall that Jimmy Carter most likely lost the 1980 election over an incident involving a swimming rabbit and a boat oar.

61F, 98%, ENE 1 mph at start (5:00 a.m.), 64F, 88% E 5 mph at end, clear and full moon, very pretty out there.  Animal of the day was a squirrel, ain't sayin' nuthin' more.

Ran 20.24 miles in 2:59:19, average 8:51 per mile, last two 8:45 and 8:25, average heart rate 146, but hitting 162 at the end.  Lower abs are still sore, especially on the right side, probably a tear in there somewhere, it doesn't seem to be improving much.  I had plenty of strength, just hurt a lot.  This was a hard run, but 20 is a good day no matter the details.

Wade is running a mudder today.  I would rather do 20 on the pavement than 6 in the mud any day.  So he had no support from me.  I think he secretly wants to be a SEAL.
