Short-Term Running Goals:

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm 60, there is no long term.

Personal:

I live, work and run in Houston, Texas.  I have run 17 marathons, some good ones and some others.  I prefer straight, flat, cold, sea-level marathons, still waiting for my first one.  I feel like there are more PRs out there.  When I have them, I am told it is time to dial it back, run for healthy reasons.  I'm sure that's right, and I'm sure it won't happen.

My wife and I are from the mountains of the west.  We have five kids, three granddaughters and three grandsons.  The kids and grandkids are native Texans but we are not -- you have to be born here.

As for my blog title: I run most of my miles before sunrise, sometimes hours before. On the back road of my neighborhood two hours before daylight, I can depend on a pack of mutts behind the boundary fence lighting up when they hear my footsteps. I have wondered what they wanted; but according to Hemingway I needn't ask.

35F, cold, calm and clear. Only 2 days after a failed long run due to high temps, beanie and gloves weather this morning. Another 5 x 1K workout, better this time. Missed the first split, but the others were 7:13 (154), 6:59 (159), 7:01 (163) and 7:00 (165), max 170. Finished with stretching and weights.

What the heck? It was like 74F at 8am for my run this morning.

Nice 1Ks Flat - what are you training for?

Flat, I have a question about your 5 x 1K splits.

Are the times given the pace per mile for those splits? (I hope so!)

Those weren't the actual times for the splits were they.

I also have noticed that you always measure your heart rate (bpm). Is there a certain heart rate you are aiming for? Sorry for my ignorance. I don't know a lot about training.

Also, have a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING tomorrow.

Burt, it's going to be that here in the morning for the Turkey Trot.

DH, next marathon is Dubai in January, then Boston; some fun runs and half-marathons mixed in, but I'm training straight through on those.

Mark, thanks, and you too. Yes, those are showing the mile pace, not the 1K pace, I guess I should be thankful for that! I use a HRM mainly to track progress -- if I do the same workout under the same conditions and it comes in lower then I know I am making progress. I also run to a specific heart rate on the low end -- 122 bpm for me -- and I will use the HRM to some extent on long runs to make sure I don't run too hard and then not be able to finish. Other than that it is for information only, not speeding up or slowing down based on HR readouts.
